Birthdays and Goodbyes

Celebrations all around!

This month, we turn 16! Wellness Centre Newcastle was opened on 21st February 2005. How quickly the time has passed. We would like to thank all of you who have supported us over the past 16 years. We are so grateful and honoured to be part of your health and wellness care. Patients’ needs, and health goals are always the top priority to us here. Letting patients know that they are always heard, supported and, through patient education, encouraged and empowered to take responsibility to make a difference to their own health and wellbeing, is still as paramount to us today, as it was 16 years ago. We are privileged to work with a fantastic Team who also believe and practice this. We feel very inspired when we receive such positive feedback from patients who have improved in a way that they didn’t think possible. Often patients come to us as a ‘last resort’ and it is so encouraging to see and hear how Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Remedial Massage has made such a massive difference to so many of you. Thank you, everyone who has contributed a patient testimonial. We all love reading the comments. We would like to say a special THANK YOU to everyone who has recommended friends and family to the Centre over the years. As a small business we pride ourselves on providing outstanding care and customer service. Your confidence in our Team is a huge compliment to us and is greatly appreciated. Please celebrate with us and help yourself to a cake or sweet treat when you are at the Centre this month. Check out our birthday decorations on Instagram and Facebook.

We are delighted and disheartened to announce that Clinic Assistant, Sheena Barwick is retiring on 20th April. Sheena has been an excellent and cherished member of the team for 14 years. Her friendly and chatty nature has made all of our patients feel welcome. Sheena started work in 1976 at the Freeman hospital and after taking time out to have her 2 children, moved into the field of Osteopathy and Chiropractic. After helping run a busy practice in Heaton, Sheena joined Wellness Centre Newcastle in 2007. Sheena’s retirment is our loss but a well deserved respite for her. She will be enjoying plenty of walks with friends and lots of time with her grandchildren. Any patients who wish to say goodbye to Sheena are welcome to pop into the Centre on Tuesday 20th April where she will be around to say goodbye in the morning. We all extend our best wishes to Sheena and wish her a peaceful retirement.

Where we are going - Well not too far…unfortunately we are still in lockdown which means we can’t travel but we are getting out of the house and walking! The lighter nights make it much more pleasurable to get out of the house after work and get to know our local neighbourhoods. Walking is a great way of increasing your daily movement and is beneficial for the mind also. Below are some fun facts about walking.

  • Walking is a mood improver and great for mental health

  • Walking sideways burns more calories than walking forward – this is due to the effort it takes to make your body work in unfamiliar ways

  • The word walk comes from the word, wealcan, which is an Old English word and literally means "to roll"

  • If you walk 9000 steps a day it will equate to walking around the Earth 3.5 times in an average lifetime

  • Walking improves balance and coordination

  • George Meegan holds the world record for the longest unbroken walk. He walked 19,019 miles in 2,425 days covering the entire western hemisphere

  • The average person walks at pace of 3.1 miles per hour

  • Naturally, walking instead of driving reduces your carbon footprint and is better for the environment

  • To burn off a quarter of a large pizza the average person would have to walk for 1 hour 23 minutes constantly

Why are we in pain? - Jaw Pain? TMJ/TMD? If you're in pain each time you chew your food, we're here to help you find relief. Pain when chewing is a symptom of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD), a condition affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the surrounding facial muscles. TMD has a range of causes for which many treatments are available. One treatment might involve chiropractic or osteopathic care. With physical manipulation of your jaw joint and muscles, a chiropractor or osteopath might be able to help ease your TMD pain. What Causes TMD? TMD is a general term covering these disorders: -Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, commonly known as TMJ - Facial pain around the jaw joint - Muscle problems affecting the joint's movement - Besides jaw pain and facial, neck, and shoulder pain TMD causes problems with opening your mouth, headaches, and other symptoms. Hormones, genetics, and behaviors can be TMD factors. TMD causes include: - Jaw injury - Improper alignment - Arthritis - Tension or stress, which might result in teeth grinding or clenching - Autoimmune diseases Sometimes, though, the exact cause isn't known. Consequently, when dentists or dental specialists treat TMD, they may prescribe several approaches. How Can a Chiropractor or Osteopath Help with TMJ or TMD? Chiropractors and Osteopaths adjust bones, joints, and muscles to improve function and reduce pain in their patients. One option a TMJ practitioners can provide is to make these adjustments to help ease TMD/TMJ symptoms, including pain: - Manipulate the jaw joint so it can move more easily - Relieve the muscle tension near the jaw - You might need to visit a TMJ chiropractor several times or even regularly to manage your TMD symptoms. If you or someone you know is suffering from TMD or jaw pain, call us on 01912431216.
